College campuses are built for late nights, but some of America’s oldest schools have residents who never graduated. Old dorms, Civil War field hospitals, former asylums, and sealed-off rooms have fed ghost stories passed from freshman to freshman every fall. Cam and I live in a college town ourselves, so we know the feeling of walking past an old brick hall after dark and wondering who might be looking back. Here are the 10 most haunted universities in the country. Bring a flashlight and maybe a roommate.

1) Ohio University – Athens, Ohio
Ohio University tops nearly every haunted campus list, and for good reason. Legend says five cemeteries around Athens form a giant pentagram. Wilson Hall’s Room 428 is said to have been sealed after strange events. The most famous story comes from The Ridges, the former Athens Lunatic Asylum, now part of the campus. In 1978, patient Margaret Schilling disappeared and was found weeks later in a locked ward. The outline left by her body is still said to stain the floor. Come Halloween, Athens throws one of the wildest street parties in the Midwest. It’s only a few hours’ drive from our place in Oxford, an easy road trip for Cam and me.

2) Gettysburg College – Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
When the bloodiest battle of the Civil War swept through town in 1863, the college’s buildings became field hospitals. Pennsylvania Hall is the center of the school’s best-known tale. Two administrators working late took the elevator to the basement. When the doors opened, they reportedly saw a Civil War operating room, with surgeons and wounded soldiers looking back at them. Students also report phantom sentries in the cupola and soldiers marching across campus at dusk. Pair a campus walk with an evening ghost tour of the battlefield town for the full experience.

3) University of Notre Dame – Notre Dame, Indiana
The most famous ghost at Notre Dame is football legend George Gipp, the “Gipper.” Campus lore says he came back after curfew one cold night in 1920, found the doors locked, and slept on the steps of Washington Hall. He died weeks later of an infection. Since then, students and theater crews in Washington Hall have reported phantom footsteps, slamming doors, mysterious music and a figure on horseback climbing the stairs. With the Golden Dome, the Grotto and a home football Saturday, it’s a great fall trip, even for the ghost-free.

4) Miami University – Oxford, Ohio
Cam and I call Oxford home, so this haunt is in our backyard. Miami’s Western Campus was once the Western College for Women. Its stone Peabody Hall is said to be the home of Helen Peabody, the school’s first principal, who supposedly still checks in on the building. Students also tell stories about Fisher Hall, a former asylum turned dorm that was torn down in 1978. Locals say its spirits simply moved next door. Uptown Oxford’s brick streets, late-night pizza joints, and fall colors make it one of the prettiest college towns in America, haunted or not.

5) Flagler College – St. Augustine, Florida
Flagler College is housed in Henry Flagler’s grand 1888 Ponce de Leon Hotel, in America’s oldest city. Legend says Flagler’s spirit never left. A dark spot in the lobby tile is said to be his footprint. The most chilling story is about his second wife, Ida Alice, who was committed to an asylum. According to campus lore, a fourth-floor room tied to her was sealed off, and a woman in blue still walks the halls. Daytime student-led tours show off Tiffany glass and gilded ceilings. The rest of St. Augustine’s ghost-tour scene takes over after dark.

6) Kenyon College – Gambier, Ohio
This tiny college on a hilltop in central Ohio has a heartbreaking ghost story. In February 1949, a fire swept through the Old Kenyon dormitory and killed nine students. The building was rebuilt, but residents still report footsteps, smoke smells, and voices in the halls late at night. Kenyon has collected other tales over the years too, from a haunted elevator in Caples Hall to whispers in the old library stacks. The campus is a beautiful Gothic stroll any time of year, and fall is the best time to go.

7) Smith College – Northampton, Massachusetts
Sessions House is one of the oldest buildings at Smith. It has a secret staircase and a love story that refuses to die. Legend says that during the Revolutionary War, young Lucy Hunt fell for a captured British officer from General Burgoyne’s army. The two met in secret on the hidden stairs. Residents say Lucy and her soldier still climb them, and every Halloween, students go looking for the stairway. Northampton is a lively, artsy New England town, and the fall foliage makes the trip worth it on its own.

8) University of Virginia – Charlottesville, Virginia
Thomas Jefferson founded the university, but Edgar Allan Poe may be its most famous ghost. Poe was a student in 1826, and his room, Number 13 on the West Range, is preserved behind glass. Visitors say a raven-dark presence still lingers there. Students also tell stories about the Rotunda and the old anatomical theater, where cadavers were once studied. The Academical Village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you get world-class history to go with the goosebumps.

9) University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Having lived in Auburn for eight years, I admit it pains me a little to put Bama on any list. But the Crimson Tide earned this one. Union troops burned most of the campus in 1865, and the Gorgas House is one of the few buildings that survived. It’s said to be haunted by Amelia Gayle Gorgas, the longtime campus librarian and matriarch. Smith Hall, home of the natural history museum, has reports of footsteps and shadowy figures among the old fossils and specimens. On a fall game day in Tuscaloosa, the spirits have plenty of company.

10) Penn State University – University Park, Pennsylvania
Penn State’s beloved president George Atherton is buried right next to Schwab Auditorium, and people say he never left. Theater students report footsteps on empty stages, flickering lights and a figure watching from the balcony. Some say the ghost is Atherton, and others think it’s Charles Schwab, the steel magnate who paid for the building. Stories also cling to the Old Botany Building and Old Main. Add a stop at the Berkey Creamery for ice cream, and you have a perfect Happy Valley day. Cam will tell you vanilla is the right call.

Whether you’re a student, a parent on a campus tour, or just a ghost hunter with a free weekend, these haunted universities mix history, legend and a little late-night fear. Many of them offer official or student-run ghost tours every October, so check the school’s calendar before you go. Then grab a sweatshirt from the bookstore, walk the old quad after sunset, and see if anyone walks with you. Cam and I have our flashlight ready. Which campus will you visit first?
