Travelers heading to Yellowstone this weekend, take note: A late-season winter storm has pushed back the scheduled opening of several park roads and entrances .Park officials originally planned to open key routes at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026. Due to heavy snow, strong winds, and freezing temperatures, those sections will now open at noon instead.

What Caused the Delay?
Up to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow fell in parts of the park on April 16.
Overnight lows dropped to 10°F, creating icy roads, deep slush, and reduced visibility.
Power outages affected areas like Canyon Village and Old Faithful, with crews working to restore service.
Park teams are continuing to plow roads overnight and will reassess conditions Friday morning. Conditions can change quickly in Yellowstone, so flexibility is key for your spring trip.
Which Roads Are Affected?
The following sections, originally set to open at 8 a.m., will now open at noon on April 17:
West Entrance (near West Yellowstone, MT) to Old Faithful
West Entrance to Canyon Village
Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris
These routes provide access to many of Yellowstone’s iconic geothermal features, geysers, and scenic areas as the park transitions into its summer season.
Good News for Some Visitors
The year-round road from the North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, to the Northeast Entrance near Cooke City, Montana (via Tower Junction) remains open. However, expect winter driving conditions—including possible snow, ice, and wind—even on open roads.
